General Technique

The images were scaled to desired size and printed out onto inkjet fabric – the pansy image was duplicated and printed twice.

The printed fabric was then ironed onto heavy weight fusible interfacing and the images were cut out: rose postcard was left in the original rectangular postcard shape, the shapes of the children were cut out of the photo, and one pansy with leaf was cut out whole, while the other was cut into separate petals. The edges can be left raw; if they are fused to the interfacing they will not ravel.

A crazy-quilt patchwork background was created by arranging assorted fabric scraps onto an 8-1/2" x 11" foundation of flat quilt batting (muslin or even heavy interfacing could be used instead). One of the patches was embellished using metallic green thread and chain stitched spirals, with the stitches going through the fabric and foundation layers.

Edges of patches were folded under and hand-embroidered using Kreinik’s metallic threads (#4 and #8 braids), and seed beads were later stitched along embroidery. All stitching goes through all the fabric and foundation layers — this holds the quilting together, in lieu of using a sewing machine. The fabric images, with the exception of the separate pansy petals, were then arranged and embroidered to the background. The small boy was outlined using Kreinik’s Facets yarn couched with sewing-weight metallic thread.

The intact pansy motif was stitched down using blanket-stitch.The individual petals were blanket-stitched around the edges and long straight-stitches were added to enhance the shading on the yellow petals. The petals were then tacked to the quilt where they meet at the center, directly on top of the intact pansy. To raise the petals from the quilt surface, small beads were stitched beneath them near the center of the flower. An iridescent lozenge-shaped green bead wash stitched over the center to hide all the tacking stitches.

A purchased tiny ribbon rose was stitched to the head of one of the girls, and either seed beads or tiny buttons were added to all the dress or shirt fronts. Additional thread and seed-bead outlining was done around the children images. Straight-stitch outlining with coordinating sewing-weight metallic threads was done on the roses and leaves in the postcard image. Strips of velvet and/or velvet ribbon was added to the edges to frame the piece, and stitched in place using seed beads and/or metallic braid.

The writing was stem-stitched with metallic braid.

TIP
When printing onto inkjet fabric, take a little time to arrange several images to fill the sheet and avoid waste. Save unused images for future projects.
